indo adventure - day 7: Sumbawa at last
Today was very exciting -- today I crossed the Wallace Line -- one of the most significant invisible boundaries in the natural world; a line that helped establish the theory of evolution, founded the science of biogeography, and remains an active area of research more than 160 years after its discovery. More to come on this in a later post -- it's very cool. And I arrived on Sumbawa, where the surf retreat commenced!
So long Bali

When our plane landed, (most of us attending the surf retreat were on the same flight), we piled into 3 cars and hit the road. It was a 2.5 hour gorgeous drive. The driver, Uisie (ooh-eee-see), was kind and quiet and had very fun dashboard decor:

I felt more at home in Sumbawa almost instantly. And herds of goats using the paved roads certainly helped.

I’ve arrived.

We had a quick lunch, then hit the waves. The water was so lovely -- more refreshing than I'd imagined. I was imagining bath water, and no relief from the heat, but it actually felt great. Despite having trained since January for this surf retreat, I quickly realized nothing compares to the real thing, and I should have trained harder!
Delicious dinner. And now an early night to bed in preparation for an early morning surf session tomorrow.
